ASU doctoral students cultivate future scientists and engineers in the Kyrene middle schools
In the Spring 2012 semester, middle school students in the Kyrene School District will learn from ASU doctoral students the practical applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a changing world. The project goals are to make science and engineering relevant to K-12 students as an investment in future innovation, to increase public engagement with science, and to develop ASU Graduate Research Fellows as citizen scientist-engineers who can effectively communicate their science and engineering knowledge and research to K-12 students, their families and their communities.

Launched in Spring 2010, the ASU Citizen Scientist-Engineer @ Kyrene program, is a three-year K-12 education project, funded by the Science Foundation of Arizona (SFAz). ASU doctoral students funded by the SFAz lead after-school groups of Kyrene Middle School students in hands-on explorations designed to nurture the middle school students’ natural curiosity and develop observation and analytical skills through hands-on experience. The expanded program will be offered at Akimel A-al Middle School, Altadena Middle School, Aprende Middle School, Centennial Middle School, Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School, and Kyrene Middle School.
